SPEAKER SESSIONS:

RETHINK OBESITY: WHY IT SHOULD MATTER FOR YOUR WORKPLACE

Obesity. An issue, condition, disease and topic that is present in all walks of life and all areas of the workplace. Yet, this is a topic that no one wants to talk about. We are all interested in growth and learning, especially when thinking about the future of employee benefits—but how can we do that unless we have an actual conversation? We are striving to promote a healthy population and a healthy workplace, but the word healthy means different things to different people. One thing we can probably all agree on, though, is that regardless of size, shape or weight, a population or workforce that is not supported, included or understood will not feel healthy at all. The misinformation, bias and blame often associated with people who live in bigger bodies can have long-lasting and detrimental effects to both the individual and to society.

Please join Nicole Ardiel, an independent employee benefit advisor, with 25 years of experience in the industry, in an open and honest discussion about this often-taboo subject. In this session, Nicole will discuss how obesity is a chronic complex disease and how it can impact the health of your employees and your business. She will also talk about the steps needed to promote inclusion and to disrupt anti-fat stigma in the workplace.

Speaker: Nicole Ardiel, GBA, CHS, BA Employee Benefit Advisor & Workplace Obesity Advocate

RETURN TO HEALTH, RETURN TO WORK: A FOCUSED APPROACH TO DISABILITY MANAGEMENT

Many situations can have a positive or negative impact on an employee’s physical and psychological health and, as a result, their ability to perform in their jobs on a daily basis. This has been further highlighted throughout the pandemic as employees worked from home, under unique and new stressors, while juggling a variety of new responsibilities.

When it comes to employee health and wellbeing, the goal is connecting people to the right level of care at the right time, while helping them quickly recover and achieve the best possible health outcomes. This presentation offers a focused approach to disability management, including a look at some of the tools and solutions available to support employees while they remain at work. As well, strategies to support those currently on disability leave in successfully returning to work when they are ready.

Speaker: Rebecca Smith, Director of Group Life and Disability Services, Medavie Blue Cross

Following the speaker presentations, we will have a panel discussion with the presenters addressing live audience questions.
