BTG Capital Inc has acquired Stephenville International Airport (IATA: YJT) on Newfoundland’s west coast, taking ownership of a more than 10,000-foot military-grade runway, surrounding land holdings and deep-water port access.

Stephenville International Airport Corp (SIAC) completed the purchase on behalf of BTG Critical Infrastructure Co-Invest LP I.

BTG said it expects demand for transportation and logistics infrastructure to keep rising, citing shifting North American supply chains, growing defence and sovereignty investment across Canada and NATO jurisdictions, and industrial reshoring.

The deal expands the firm’s infrastructure platform across transportation, energy, industrial and utility sectors in Canada.

According to BTG, the airport carries aviation and industrial infrastructure and sits along North Atlantic aviation and trade corridors.

BTG said it will pursue a phased strategy to restore operations, upgrade infrastructure and build commercial activity at the site.

The firm said it will assess expanding cargo and logistics operations, military and defence-related activity, aerospace and industrial partnerships, advanced manufacturing, energy integration, port and intermodal connectivity, and aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul.

C. Brett Stevenson, managing partner and founder of BTG Capital, said Atlantic Canada is drawing more infrastructure, logistics and industrial investment.

He said Stephenville's infrastructure, geographic position and capacity to scale support long-term development, and that the airport could serve as an economic and transportation hub for Newfoundland and Labrador and the wider Atlantic region.

BTG said it has engaged The Loomex Group Ltd to handle day-to-day airport management, regulatory coordination and commercial strategy for SIAC.

Loomex manages six regional airports in Canada and serves several other North American regional airports each year.

BTG said it intends to work with the Town of Stephenville, the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Indigenous groups and regional industry as it develops the site.
