New no-cost tool turns meal photos and glucose data into guidance for chronic disease risk
Free, AI-driven nutrition support is about to become a standard feature on every Equitable group benefits plan.
Effective April 1, Equitable will add the RxFood nutrition platform to all group benefits plans at no additional cost to plan members.
The change gives members immediate eligibility to sign up, download the RxFood mobile app and begin tracking their meals within their existing coverage.
RxFood uses artificial intelligence to analyse photos of meals taken on a smartphone.
The app assesses calories, protein, fat and fibre on the plate and, after several days of logging, produces a nutrition summary that shows how a person’s eating patterns line up with their health goals.
It then provides ongoing personalised feedback, recipe ideas, grocery planning tools and practical food swaps to support day‑to‑day decisions.
The platform also generates a Mediterranean Diet Score, reflecting a pattern widely used in clinical settings to help reduce the risk of chronic conditions and to support people managing high cholesterol, diabetes and other chronic diseases.
People with diabetes who use a Dexcom continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) system can link it to their RxFood account to see how specific foods affect their blood glucose levels.
RxFood is described as Canada’s first clinically validated nutrition platform using AI-powered technology to analyse meals and translate them into actionable health insights.
Leading health‑care institutions, including SickKids Hospital, Diabetes Canada and CHEO (Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario), already use the platform to support nutrition‑related outcomes.
Don Bisch, director, group product and marketing at Equitable, says “good health often stems from everyday choices — especially what we eat.”
He says the RxFood partnership is designed to support better health for group benefits plan members and help more Canadians eat better — and feel better.
