Saskatchewan Blue Cross (SBC) is a not-for-profit health benefits provider serving residents and employers across Saskatchewan. The organization offers group benefits, health, travel, and life insurance to more than 200,000 members. It also partners with more than 1,000 employer groups on workplace benefits plans.

History of Saskatchewan Blue Cross

SBC started in 1946, founded by seven doctors who set up a not-for-profit to bring health coverage to Saskatchewan residents. The organization went through two name changes over the following decades before landing on its current name.

It also expanded its product lineup well beyond health insurance during that time. Saskatchewan Blue Cross now operates as an independent licensee of the Canadian Association of Blue Cross Plans.

Building a provincial benefits provider

As the organization grew, it added group benefits, travel, life, and disability products to its offering. Employer groups joined individual members as a core part of its business over time. Staff marked the 75th anniversary by collectively donating $40,000 to more than 100 local charities.

A new CEO and continued momentum

Saskatchewan Blue Cross named Kelly Wilson its new president and CEO in June 2023, following Shelley Vandenberg's resignation earlier that year. Wilson had served as interim CEO since January before the board confirmed her permanently. The organization went on to earn its 10th straight Saskatchewan's Top Employers designation in 2026.

Saskatchewan Blue Cross at 80

The organization marked its 80th anniversary in 2026 as one of the province's longest-running not-for-profit health benefits providers. That same year, SBC launched the 80 Years, 80 Grants initiative, committing $80,000 to Saskatchewan community organizations focused on health and wellness.
