Insurer adds at-work accommodation option outside disability plans

Employers can now manage employee medical accommodation requests without affecting disability claims experience.

Medavie Blue Cross has launched At-work Accommodation Services, a fee-for-service program that helps organizations handle medical accommodation requests through a standardized process managed by accommodation experts.

The service focuses on balancing operational needs with employee wellbeing and ensuring accommodations are both appropriate and sustainable.

Offered in partnership with Arc Health, the service gives employers expert guidance to:

  • Balance operational needs with employee wellbeing
  • Strengthen workplace culture and retention through consistent, inclusive practices
  • Mitigate legal and financial risk by ensuring accommodations comply with employment legislation and organizational policy
  • Reduce administrative burden with a clear, standardized process

Unlike disability programs, At-work Accommodation Services do not impact disability rates or claims performance.

The service is designed to assist with requests from employees who do not have an active Disability Case Management File open with Medavie or any other disability carrier.

Employers can register at no cost and pay only when they use the service, allowing them to respond quickly to accommodation requests and reduce administrative and legal risk.

Gillian Grossman, senior product specialist at Medavie Blue Cross, said the service “helps employers meet their duty to accommodate with confidence, while ensuring employees receive the right level of support to stay healthy and productive at work.”

Grossman said the service helps organizations support employees and protect their business. She said it manages accommodations in a consistent, compliant way that aligns with current legal and workplace requirements.
